PREPARE TO TAKE ACTION

"Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity."

- Roman Philosopher Seneca the Younger

My father had this quote posted above his desk - it was a philosophy by which he lived.

Thanks to his 'organizing' genes, which I inherited, planning comes easily to me.  But going from preparation to action can be a big step.  What most often gets in our way is a need for perfection.  If we are afraid to launch until every duck is in a row, we can become frozen and incapable of moving forward.  Pareto's Principle (also known as the 80-20 rule) is a good reminder that 20 percent of the effort will provide 80 percent of the results.

If you find yourself in "analysis paralysis," unable to proceed, try to assess if you are at least 80 percent ready.  If you are, force yourself to move forward.  The rest of the details will fall into place.

The other element that attracts increased opportunity is the ability to be flexible.  It is the combination of preparation and flexibility that enables you to take advantage of opportunities as they arise and allows "Luck" to find you.
